Der Schieber wird als Absperrorgan in die Rohrleitung eingebaut und regelt den Durchfluss des Mediums in Wasserversorgungssystemen (außer Trinkwasserversorgungssystemen) und in der chemischen Industrie. Das Funktionsprinzip des Schiebers besteht darin, den Schieber (Schieberplatte) senkrecht zum Durchfluss des Mediums zu bewegen. Der Durchfluss wird gestoppt, wenn der Durchmesser der Nennweite der Rohrleitung vollständig blockiert ist, und eingestellt, wenn er teilweise blockiert ist.
